Changing Coverage

You may not change or cancel your benefit elections during the year unless you experience a qualifying life event. Otherwise, your next opportunity to change your benefits will be the next Open Enrollment period.

Qualifying Life Events

Qualifying life events include, but are not limited, to the events listed below.

  • Marriage
  • Divorce or legal separation
  • Birth or adoption of an eligible child
  • Death of your spouse or covered child
  • Loss or addition of other group coverage
  • Change in your or your spouse’s work status that affects your benefits (ie, termination or commencement of employment, reduction or increase in hours of employment, a commencement of or return from an unpaid leave of absence, change in worksite affecting coverage).
  • Change in residence that affects your eligibility for coverage
  • You or your covered dependent becomes eligible for Medicare, Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) benefits

What You Need to Do

Changes must be made within 31 days of the life event and documentation will be required. The coverage effective date will be the first of the month following receipt of notification except in the case of birth, adoption, or placement for adoption. In these cases, you have 45 days to submit the Qualifying Life Event form, and the effective date of coverage is the date of the event.

Keep in mind: When changing your benefits due to a life event, the changes you make must be consistent with that event.
