Consumer Tips
When it comes to purchasing products, we almost always look at the price tag. For larger purchases, such as a car or television, we might do hours of research to find the best type for our family and get the best deal.
Yet with all the money we spend on health care — from per-paycheck costs to prescriptions to doctor’s visits — we rarely think about the price of these services. And, as health care prices continue to rise, that ends up costing more for you and Allied Universal®. Help control your health spending with these tips.
Be Well, Buy Smart
Making smart health care decisions saves you money.
Use in-network providers.
If your medical plan offers both in- and out-of-network coverage, try to stick with the in-network options. These are providers who have agreed to charge only up to negotiated rates and bill your insurance company directly, which saves you money and time. Also, check with your insurance company to ensure that the services you and your dependents require are covered before you receive care.
Choose the right place to get care.
Should you use telemedicine or the Nurseline available through your plan or go to the doctor’s office, an urgent care facility, or the emergency room? Going to the most appropriate place for your needs will save you time and money! Learn more on Tools and Resources.
Shop smart for prescriptions.
Using generic alternatives will almost always save you money — and they’re just as effective as brand name prescriptions. For your ongoing prescriptions, if your plan offers, use the mail-order service to save money and time.
Keep in mind: Some of our plans require maintenance medications to be filled by mail order, or at a specific retail pharmacy.
Take advantage of the Quit For Life Program.
The Quit For Life Program offers valuable resources to help you quit smoking or using tobacco or vaping products.
